went from Bengal to England after I came hither, I beleive about January 1776 but it might be in January 1777, and after he was gone it became publickly Notorious that Mr. Lionel Darrel was charged by Mr. William Wadsworth, the same who was afterward Sheriff, with having as Store-Keeper defrauded the Company to a very great amount, and none of Mr. Darrels friends attempted to deny his having been guilty of the Frauds charged on him by this Mr. William Wadsworth, but they attempted to justify them under the name of Perquisites of Office the usual Cover of Fraud in this Country, and in other Countries also: And they severely reproach’d Mr. Wodsworth for giving these informations of Frauds to General Clavering, who caused them to be inquired into, and written in the Proceedings of the Governor-General and Council, because Mr. Darrel had been the Patron and intimate Friend of Mr. Wodsworth.
Although these Charges against Mr. Darrel, were transmitted to England, I never heard whether he had made any
