Memo:
[[Saturday July 7th, 1781
about six o’clock in the evening 19 guns fired for the Governor General gone away towards Lucknow: the same day the minute for Sir Robert Chambers to be superintendent of the court of justice to be established at Chinsurah is done today; Sir Robert told me of it on Monday July 9th which was the first time I had of it: Chambers said to me “I know you don’t approve of our taking anything from him; but except that I suppose you see no objection”: I assented certainly a very proper position: Chambers said he found he had no chance of being in the Council; that no position would be appointed but those whom Hastings chose: that he could save very little out his salary: I said our salaries were undoubtedly too small:
Note. It is probable it will never be offered to me before [it l o ] [see, so] I will take nothing from the Governor and Council nor from the Company; ]]
