Hastings, Macdonald, Grant, Russell, Donevan, and others, broke up two or three at a time, and left me there. I do not know whither they went, nor what else passed. I did see Donevan strike a man. Donevan came to me where I was sitting, and said “We have been in a fray: I have given Grant satisfaction for I have broken Hastings’s head. Grant is a black fifer. Donevan and I were going home, and came to a jill, or a channel, and I saw a man sitting on the bank, where they had been sheering sheep. He was a black man and had a knife for sheering with some wool at the bottom of a basket. I saw no other native there at that time.
