William Smoult Esquire
Was now appointed and Sworn in One of the Clerks of the Papers &c on the Resignation, now made by Thomas Vowler Short Esquire who had held that Office while Mr. Smoult was gone to England on his promise to resign in Favour of Mr. Smoult when he return’d.
Sir Robert Chambers said (aloud to the Court) that the Cheif Justice having formerly agreed to the appointment of Mr. Smoult, it was not necessary to stay for his consent to this appointment.
My brother Chambers said “the Cheif Justice” and not as he most commonly does, the Lord Chief Justice: He said to me (not aloud to the Court) “I do not know whether I ought to call him only Cheif Justice, or Lord Chief Justice” I answer’d “I have no doubt
