Mr. Thompson, Junior Council for the Plaintiff, opened the Pleadings, which were as follow:
FORT WILLIAM} FRANCIS BALLADON THOMAS, by George
IN BENGAL } Wroughton, his Attorney, complains of JOHN BRISTOW, who is a British Subject, residing within the province of Bengal; and, therefore, a person subject to the jurisdiction of this Honorable Court; for that, Whereas the said Francis Balladon Thomas now is, and from the time of his birth hitherto hath been, a good, true and faithful subject of the realm of England, and hath always obtained and had a good name, fame, credit, and reputation, and never was guilty, or suspected to be guilty, of conduct and behaviour unbecoming the character of a gentleman: and Whereas the said Francis Balladon Thomas, on the 7th day of December, in the year of our Lord 1784, and love before, was a Surgeon in the Service of the United Company of Merchants of England, trading to the East Indies, under the Presidency of Fort William, in Bengal: Nevertheless the said John Bristow, well knowing the premises, and well knowing that he, the said Francis Balladon
