I saw Cuchil tied by the hands, & Jackson flogging him with a whip. Jackson also set two dogs at him to bite him. Lateef did not go with us. I stood in the road, near the door: the prisoner & the deceased were then about as far from me as I now am from the north window of this room. The deceased was tied to the post of a house, which was going to be built. The deceased received about 25 blows. Four or five bearers were near the prisoner. The wife of the deceased said: “Do not beat him: tie him, & send him to-morrow to a magistrate.” The prisoner said: “I have caught a thief & will do what I please with him.” The place, where I saw the woman crying, was
