1790. Sessions. [Friday] July 30.

fixed, that a thatch might be raised over them. I saw the prisoner give about 20 or 25 blows, & then I went to a distance from the place, where I stood before. The wife of the deceased begged the prisoner to let him go. The prisoner said Who are you? She answered His wife. The prisoner said If you do not go away, I will shoot you. This made me go; but I had said nothing. We then went away. After that I never more saw the deceased alive. When I saw the deceased beaten, I did not take notice of his body. I had known the deceased 2 or 3 years: he was an honest & religious man, & had a pretty good understanding. He had a house of his own; as it was believed in the neighborhood. He had grey hair, & was upward of fifty years old.
