On the 30th of last May, the first witness came & told me her husband had been much beaten by an European. I ordered serjeant Mascal to go with the woman, & try to find the man complained of. in the mean time the deceased was brought on a cot to me, & I ordered Panchu, the black doctor of my office, to examine him. The doctor examind him, & told me he thought the man would lose his eye, not his life. The deceased was then sent to his own house. The woman & the serjeant returned to me, & the woman said the European who had beaten her husband, went into a house in Meerza Jany Gully: she described the house. I sent Serjeant Funk and others, who returned and told me a Mr. Blondel lived in that house. I inquired but on the day found no such person as Mr. Blondel: on Wednesday morning, I understand (the deceased) John was worse. I then sent Serjt Funk & my writer Baptist to inquire into
