I did not see the black man attempt to strike Russel with the hook. After Hastings tried to stop Russel, Donevan struck Hastings, who went away hurt, leaving Donevan & Russel. I saw the man receive two blows from Russel; one knocked him down, he then rose. Hastings interposed; then Russel again knocked the man down, after which the man did not stir hand or foot. I saw only those two blows given. I did not see Donevan strike the man I did not stay many minutes, not half-quarter of an hour. I left both Russel & Donevan near the man. I cannot say whether Hastings could have seen either of them strike the native: he stood on one side. When I returned, Hastings went across the fields.
