When I went to them Chamru had seized the handle of the cutlass with his left hand, and lay with his right elbow on the blade edge of it; while the prisoner held the point. When I parted them, Smith went to his bungalow & the mob followed him with Chambru at their head. They went to his house, to which I also went. Chamru came into the garden. Smith’s wife went out to appease Chamru, who struck her and said that he would kill her husband, if he could catch him. I then left them and went home. I thought all danger was over. When I parted them, I found blood on my hands, but whether it came from Smith or Chamru, I cannot tell. I saw Smith aim blows at Chamru, but cannot
