The Court did not sit ‘till a quarter of an hour after Ten; because I was engaged at home reading my Letters from England, which came by the Osterly and Grosvenor, two of the Company’s Ships, some late last night and some this morning. My brother Chambers was at the Court House before me, which has not happen’d before any day this Term or Sittings. He staid for me, and we went into Court togather.
Later News than these Ships brought had been received by way of Suez, by which we knew on Monday July 6th that war had been declared between England and France, at London on the 18th of March 1778, and in Paris on the 30th of March 1778, and on Friday July 10th the Company’s Forces had taken Possession of the French Settlement of Chandernagore, and of Garhatty, which is the Country House of the Governor of Chandernagore, and about two Miles
