1777. Sessions. [Friday] December 19.

Women. We told him they ought to be either Wives or Widows who had had Children. It was said the Proper Persons would be some of the Portuguese Women, and if they could be found some of the inferior English Women. By Portuguese we mean here, several different sort of people, frequently distinguish’d by the name of Fringgees, which includes all Europeans, and some times call’d Callah-Fringgees, that is black Fringges, the General Term Portuguese we use for, those who are really the descendants of proper Portugueze natives of Portugal who were settled at Chittagong, and on a Conquest of them, many who were not kill’d nor could hide themselves at Chittagong were brought [ILL] by the conquerors and settled at Houghley long before the English were settled in Bengal; for Men disended from English and other European Fathers and Black Mothers, even some who are Protestants; for Men and women who cease to be consider’d as [Hindus or] Mahommedans because they live [as Christians] and eat and drink as they do:
