been transmitted to me by Mr. Hay. I wrote the letter now produced, (L1.) read & sent it to the Gov. Genl in Council. The letter (Exh. Y.) I received from one of my hircarrahs, named Dumun; the letter came to me, certainly in the cover now produced, to which it is now tied: it was wafered. Before 10 June 1791 I certainly never used any abusive epithets concerning Mr. Fenwick to any person whatever. I understood Mr. Fenwick returned to India last year. I certainly never spoke to Mr. Fenwick in my life. From his return till 25 Aug 1790 no intercourse by letter or otherwise passed between him & me.
I look at two papers, M1 & [ILL] which I recd 16 July 1791 from one of my assistants. I have read the copy of a letter annexed to that notice. I never received from Mr. F any letter of the same purport with that copy nor any thing like it, nor [ILL] I ever heard
