6 months by consequence of my letter, the check of 500 R. was sent, but ill timed, bec he did not & I thought it – premeditated design of Mr. Fenwick to impose on my understanding. He had been with me the evening before, & inquired when I would send out my next publication: on the 5th he did not come though he seldom absented himself in the evening. I put the letter to Mr. L & the check into the drawer, as I recd them; returning a few lines by the bearer. Next morning I perused with attention the letter to Mr. L togr with the letter wch covered it, of instructions to me, & returned both to Mr. Fenwick. Before my man cd reach Mr. F’s house, his servt brot me the note, at wch I now look (Exh. N.) in answer to my note of the night before. I also returned to Mr. Fenwick the check on one of the banks, bec. I looked on it as a bribe to carry the letter to Mr. Larkins.
