remember Mr. Phayre’s coming & taking Mr. Fenwick aside. I now know but then did not know, why Mr. Phayre did not stay to dinner. I am sure the reason was not that Phayre was afraid Mr. Larkins shd trace him to Mr. Fenwick’s house. When Phayre left the house, dinner was coming on the table & when Phayre came in, he was in great perturbation. He did not take notice of me but took Mr. Fenwick to the corner of the room, where he mt have stayed about 10 minutes: he went away as he came witht noticing me. I ten went into the same room with Mr. Fenwick, & asked what was the matter with Mr. Phayre. Mr. Fenwick told me Mr. Lakrins began to suspect Mr. Phayre. I told Fenwick that if any thing happened to Phayre, I shd consider myself as the cause of it, & therefore
