the 17 or 18 April 1790. From that day till the Durgapuja, that is the end of Sept or beginning of October, he resided constantly at Nattore. As he had been particularly introduced to me, I knew his person perfectly; and he had been appointed agent for some Ryots to complain of the Raja’s Naib; so that he attended at my Cutcherry, and two, or three days at most, were the longest interval in which I did not see him at Nattore, which is about 60 miles from Calcutta. The nearest part of the great river to Nattore is Surdah, about ten miles from it. In the interval of three days he could not have come to Calcutta & returned.
