1777. Sessions. [Monday] Dec. 8th

mark on them which I put with my own hand with a Pencil. I had studs of the sort mention'd, but I cannot swear to them because there are no marks on them. A search was made on board on account of the box, as I heard, which Mr. Shearman had given a Receipt for in England, which was directed to the late general Clavering. I was not on board at the time of the search. Captain Maw sent for me, and at his house in Calcutta I saw my Cloths which are now here produced.

Several things had been lost on board of ship, and a General Search was ordered on board the beginning of last November at Culpee. I carried those orders from Captain Maw to Sir Charles Hudson who was commanding officer. As the suspicion alight principally on the prisoner, Sir Charles Hudson demanded the Key of his Chest of him, and he gave it, and I was sent to search the Chest. I found a box directed to General Clavering. I sent it up to Sir Charles Hudson, and soon after, before it could have been open'd and shut again I saw it in possession of Sir Charles Hudson,
