[[Shorthand – Sir Robert Chambers was staying at home about his own business concerning I believe executing conveyance of the house built by Colonel Fullarton in Calcutta in which Mr. Hastings now will have the next house directly northwest of my house: and the conveyance of the house which Mr. Lyon has lately built situated N. W. from the house I inhabit and directly North from the house lately inhabited by Mr. Alderisy and built by Mr. Archibald Kier which is now about to be enlarged and used for a court house for this courts: both which houses Sir Robert Chambers has bought:
Mr. Motte, and Gopee Nasir both came to my house this morning before I came into court and Mr. Motte told me he was sent by the Governor General Mr. Hastings to tell me that great application was made on behalf of Rammarain who was convicted of a conspiracy against Gopee Nasir and that Mr. Hastings was willing that Gopee should do anything that might be thought proper by me and the court; that the punishment should be made as slight as the court thought proper: I told him I thought it would be wrong to give as a public reason the defendant being a Brahmin but that I thought it would be very right that the prosecutor Gopee should appear
