This Indictment consisted of two Counts, the first, for an assault on John Werner Vanden Velden with an intent to Murder him; the second, for an assault and battery on John Werner Vanden Velden.
The Defendants all Pleaded Not Guilty.
Mr. Vanden Velden, Swore That in last July as he was coming to Calcutta from Barnagore where he then lived about Seven o’Clock in the Evening, he was attacked by many Men near Mr. William Barton’s House, which is in the way between Barnagore and Fort William, who attempted to beat his Coachman, the Servants behind his Chariot, and his Scisses, but were prevented by Mr. Vanden Velden’s getting out of his Chariot with his drawn sword: That on his Return late the same night, he was attack’d by a large number of arm’d Men, and his Coachman and other Servants were attack’d by these Men, who beat with great sticks, not only his Servants, but his Horses; That he again got out of his
