William Bailey, Ram Ram Bose, and Ramjoy.
Tried for a Conspiracy to Defraud Shaw Mahommed of Eleven Peices of Cloth of the Value of thirty Pounds of Lawful Money of Great Britain.
Bailey and Ram Ram Bose, and some times others with them were concern’d in a great number of frauds by which Bailey and Ram Ram Bose cheifly, obtain’d Goods from many different people, in the whole to the amount of an Hundred Thousand Rupees and more as they said.
In this case the pretence was that Bailey was Chief of Assam and a great Man and a rich Man, and Ram Ram Bose his Dewan and Ramjoy a Banyan or Sircar under Ram Rm Bose and they had got cloth from Shaw Mahommed under these pretences. Bailey appear’d to those that he deceived as the inhabitant of a very good house, and in all respects as a Man of Property, but he was in truth worth nothing.
Bailey’s defence now, was, that he knew nothing of any fraud, but was only a writer
